The Royal Institute of Art has been educating artists and architects since 1735. It is Sweden’s largest institution of higher education in Fine Art and Architecture. The faculty of artists, theoreticians, and architects at the Royal Institute of Art is highly acclaimed, both at the national level and internationally. Students are trained to enter the field of artistic and architectural practice at the highest level.

The Royal Institute of Art offers a five-year program in Fine Art and a two-year master’s degree in Fine Art. The postgraduate program offers professional development in Fine Art and Architecture with a focus on research methodology and project-based artistic research. Around 230 students are currently enrolled, and the school is supported by 70 employees. As of 2021 the institute is organized into two departments, each with a board and a prefect. The Institute is located on Skeppsholmen in central Stockholm alongside other key arts and cultural institutions. The main building will be renovated in 2024-2025 in order to consolidate teaching and research activities.

The Royal Institute of Art in the center of Stockholm is Swedens oldest and largest institution of higher learning for fine arts. The school is currently in a phase of rapid development, aiming to create the art education of the future. We are looking for a professor in art theory and history of ideas of art and a professor in fine arts with a focus on artistic research, who is also a research leader.

Description of the field

The artistic research chair has a special focus on critical and creative approaches to the altered ecological living conditions of the Anthropocene. The idea is to create a research environment where these issues are articulated in artistic research processes. A prominent art practice at a very high level in the field is a crucial qualification the position, thus 50 percent of the period of employment will be reserved for personal artistic research.

The Royal Institute of Art offers a practice-based research environment, including five Ph.D. students and 11 researchers, which is under intense development with good prospects for continued expansion. The research at the Royal Institute of Art, as well as the undergraduate curriculum, exist in an international context and include prominent artists. At the Royal Institute of Art research and the undergraduate curriculum make up an integrated environment that stimulates an advanced discourse on art and the contexts of contemporary art. The research is interdisciplinary and in dialogue with society at large. 

Job description

As the leader of artistic research at the school you will be tasked with structuring and developing the research environment at all levels in dialogue with students, coworkers, and the school administration. You will lead the coordination of research at the school and keep a close eye on the evolution of the field of artistic research.

Responsibilities will also include:

  • Building, leading and developing the school’s practice-based artistic research environment
  • acting as an advisor at a research level
  • contributing to the development of the school’s pedagogy
  • developing the form and content of the Ph.D. program
  • structuring and leading the school’s higher seminar
  • structuring and leading the school’s Ph.D. advisor seminar
  • collaborating with all teachers in planning the curriculum
  • collaborating with other teachers in the field of Architecture and critical studies
  • participating in collegial work
  • following the evolution of artistic research nationally and internationally
  • participating in and developing the school’s national and international network for artistic research
  • conducting your own practice-based artistic research

Qualifications

The qualifications for being hired as professor on an artistic basis include:

  • proven artistic skill
  • proven pedagogical skill

Assessment criteria

The Royal Institute of Art places special weight on artistic skill. Artistic skill is demonstrated by being well-documented independent artistic activity at a high level and a personal qualified art practice as well as through research projects. 

Pedagogical skill includes:

  • excellent ability to develop, lead, and implement high quality education at all educational levels
  • ability to stimulate and develop the learning processes of the students
  • good ability to develop pedagogy

Pedagogical skill also includes pedagogical engagement, as well as a well-developed pedagogical outlook and vision for teaching.

Other assessment criteria for the position include: 

  • excellent ability to build, lead, and develop a high-quality practice-based artistic research environment by testing and developing new artistic methods of research
  • good ability to collaborate with other institutes of higher learning and society at large in Sweden as well as internationally
  • administrative skill and comprehensive planning abilities
  • good collaborative ability, sense of responsibility, and mature leadership
  • a personal art practice and personal artistic research that relates critically and creatively to the altered ecological living conditions of the Anthropocene
  • comprehensive as well as broad knowledge of the application of artistic research methods
  • good ability to relate epistemological and ontological issues to practice-based artistic research processes
  • good knowledge regarding the development of the field of the artistic research
  • good international overview of the field
  • activity in international networks in the field

The position demands good knowledge of spoken as well as written English.

The position

The position is art-based and full-time, the period of employment is five years. The appointment may be extended. The total period of employment may not, however, exceed ten years. Work within the school at large, as well as administrative work is part of the job description. Time set aside for artistic research and artistic development makes up 50 percent of the period of employment.
